Sustainability reporting creates a familiar knowledge problem.
Organizations collect large amounts of environmental data, publish annual sustainability reports, maintain internal ESG documentation, and track metrics such as greenhouse gas emissions and renewable-energy use.
The information exists. Finding and comparing it is another matter.
Microsoft’s Sustainability Insights agent template in Copilot Studio is designed to make that information easier to interrogate conversationally.
What Is the Sustainability Insights Agent?
Sustainability Insights is one of Microsoft’s built-in Copilot Studio agent templates.
Microsoft says the template helps organizations uncover information about sustainability goals and progress, compare results from one reporting period to another, and benchmark results against other organizations.
Microsoft provides prebuilt topics and messages as a starting point. The organization then replaces the default knowledge sources with its own sustainability reports, corporate-responsibility portals, websites, or other relevant information.
The agent is therefore not a preloaded sustainability database. It is a framework for querying the sustainability information your organization chooses to provide.
What Can Someone Ask It?
Microsoft gives examples such as: “What are our total greenhouse gas emissions?”, “What are our Scope 1 emissions?”, “How did our emissions this year compare with last year?”, and “How do our Scope 1 emissions compare with another organization?”
Those are exactly the kinds of questions that can otherwise require someone to open several reports, search through long PDF documents, identify the correct reporting period, and manually compare values.
The agent changes the interface.
Instead of asking an employee to understand where the sustainability data lives, the employee asks the business question directly.
Year-Over-Year Comparisons Are a Core Use Case
One of the template’s stronger features is comparison across reporting periods.
Suppose a manufacturer publishes annual sustainability reports for 2024, 2025, and 2026.
An employee could ask: “How have Scope 2 emissions changed over the last three years?”, “What percentage of our electricity came from renewable sources last year?”, or “Did our total greenhouse gas emissions improve compared with the previous reporting period?”
That makes it useful for executives, sustainability teams, operations managers, and employees preparing reports or presentations.
It Can Also Benchmark Against Other Organizations
The template can use public sustainability information from other companies as additional knowledge sources.
Microsoft includes a predefined comparison pattern that lets an organization specify its own company and another organization it wants to benchmark against.
That does not automatically make the comparison meaningful.
Two companies may calculate or disclose metrics differently. Reporting periods can differ. Organizational boundaries can differ. One company may provide more complete reporting than another.
The agent can retrieve and compare the available information, but someone still needs to understand whether the underlying figures are actually comparable.
PDFs Can Become a Problem
Sustainability reports are often long PDFs filled with charts and tables.
That creates a practical retrieval problem.
Microsoft warns that an agent may struggle to extract required data points from tables embedded inside PDF reports. Its suggested workaround is to extract the tables, save the information as CSV files, and provide those files as additional knowledge sources.
This is a good example of a broader AI rule: the format of the source information matters.
A beautifully designed annual report may be excellent for a human reader while being a poor knowledge source for reliable AI retrieval.
Before deploying an agent, organizations may need to restructure important information so it can be consistently interpreted.
That is the same principle behind preparing organizational content for AI retrieval: authoritative information needs to be structured, current, contextual, permission-aware, and maintainable.
Reporting Periods Need to Be Explicit
Sustainability metrics change over time.
A question such as “What are our Scope 1 emissions?” is incomplete if the knowledge source contains several years of reporting.
Microsoft recommends explicitly identifying the reporting period and describes using custom topics and Power Fx to retrieve KPI values for a specified period.
AI works better when ambiguity is handled deliberately instead of leaving the model to guess.
A good agent might respond, “Which reporting year do you mean?” before giving the answer.
That simple clarification can be more valuable than a sophisticated response based on the wrong year.
Internal Sustainability Knowledge Can Go Beyond ESG Reports
The template does not have to stop with published sustainability reporting.
An organization might also have internal procedures covering waste disposal, energy management, fleet policies, procurement standards, environmental reporting responsibilities, supplier requirements, or facility operations.
Those documents could potentially become governed knowledge sources for an internal sustainability agent.

The Template Still Requires Governance
Microsoft provides the starting point.
The organization still has to determine which reports are authoritative, which reporting years are current, which metrics are comparable, which external sources are trustworthy, who owns the information, what happens when two sources disagree, what users are allowed to access, and how answers will be tested.
An incorrect sustainability metric presented confidently can easily make its way into an executive presentation, customer response, or public report.
So this is an analytical and retrieval assistant, not an autonomous ESG reporting authority.
Why Sustainability Insights Is Interesting
The Sustainability Insights agent illustrates a broader business use for Copilot Studio.
Companies accumulate large amounts of specialized information that only a few employees know how to navigate.
Finance has financial reports. IT has technical documentation. HR has policies. Sustainability teams have ESG reports and environmental data.
Focused agents can give employees a conversational interface into each of those knowledge domains.
The difficult part is not creating the chat window.
It is making sure the information underneath it is trustworthy enough to answer from.
